Is Enrichment Club a Good Fit?

DEC’s participant profile helps families consider whether the program can safely and meaningfully support their loved one. A conversation and visit are the best next steps for reviewing individual needs.

Participation and Social Connection

The current DEC profile describes participants who can take part in modified activities with prompting or step-by-step guidance, communicate needs and desires, and engage socially even when conversation or word-finding is difficult.

Mobility, Meals, and Toileting

The profile includes people who walk independently or use a mobility device, may need occasional support getting in or out of a chair, feed themselves independently, and can manage toileting with reminders or limited help to begin.

Needs the Program Cannot Accommodate

The current profile says the program cannot accommodate frequent one-to-one assistance for activities, walking, feeding, or toileting; aggressive or unsafe behavior; refusal or inability to use a needed mobility device; blended or mashed-food requirements; or repeated attempts to leave secure areas.

Is Enrichment Club the right fit?

Our program is designed for adults with dementia who can participate safely in a social day-program setting. This guide can help families understand the level of support we are equipped to provide.

A helpful starting point

A participant may be a good fit if they can…

Every person is different. These practical examples describe abilities that generally work well in our group environment.

Join activities

  • Participate in modified activities, sometimes with prompting or step-by-step instructions
  • Return to an activity after becoming distracted
  • Accept help with problem-solving or navigating the center

Connect and communicate

  • Initiate or respond socially, or comfortably wait for others to engage
  • Communicate basic needs
  • Participate even when finding words or following conversation is difficult

Move safely

  • Walk independently or use a mobility device
  • Need only occasional support when walking or rising from a chair

Manage daily needs

  • Feed themselves, with food cut when needed
  • Use the restroom with reminders or limited help getting started
  • Use incontinence products appropriately when needed
Safety and group participation

Our program cannot accommodate needs that require ongoing one-to-one care.

For the safety and wellbeing of every participant, Enrichment Club is not equipped for the following levels of support.

Continuous activity support

  • One-to-one attention to participate in group activities
  • Limited comprehension that prevents participation
  • Refusal or inability to join most available activities

Unsafe or disruptive behavior

  • Frequent suspicious, aggressive, combative, inappropriate, or unsafe behavior
  • Frequent difficulty respecting others’ personal space
  • Attempts to leave secure areas

Extensive mobility or personal care

  • Frequent support for walking or getting in and out of a chair
  • Refusal to use a necessary mobility device
  • One-to-one toileting or incontinence assistance
  • Blended or mashed food, or assistance with feeding

Frequent emotional distress

  • Becoming frequently or easily upset, angry, anxious, or depressed
  • Hallucinations that are regularly upsetting

A conversation is the best next step.
